George Wilson was a convicted
criminal. He had robbed and murdered another
person. Wilson’s conviction and punishment for his crime
was to be hanged. President Andrew Jackson wished to
show grace and mercy to Wilson by pardoning him of his
crimes. Upon hearing of this compassionate act from the
President himself, Wilson refuses the pardon. It became
a matter of discussion and legality whether Wilson could
refuse the direct wishes of the President of the United
States. The hanging was put on hold until the courts
came to a decision. The issue was tried all the way to
the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that a pardon
is only good if someone accepts it. Wilson was later
hanged for his crimes. Jesus wants to pardon us from
our sins and He alone has the power to save our
souls. We have the choice to accept his free gift or
refuse it.
